pit fired ceramic vessel by Jane White.
Jane's work is constantly evolving, exploring the beauty of the form, referencing the natural world around her, and the enduring qualities of the ancient pots in our national collections. Hand built and burnished, these fragile forms are then buried in a deep trench, surrounded by organic material, and a large fire is built over them. The resulting alchemy transforms the surface of the clay into a myriad
of dramatic colours and patterns. This is an exciting but risky technique, resulting in work where surface and form becomes seamlessly unified, as in nature, and each piece that survives is totally unique.
